The
Family Center provides options in a nurturing environment to victims
of domestic abuse through safe shelter, offered in partnership with
supportive services to empower families to make healthy decisions
regarding their lives and those of their children.
The organization began on July 1, 1984, in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. In
partnership with a multitude of community agencies, the center is able to
provide victims of abuse with a foundation toward a violence-free
life. The center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All
contacts are confidential and there are no fees.
The Family Center
offers specific programs
tailored to meet clients specific needs. Weekly support groups are also provided to help victims
build their self-esteem and enhance their coping skills. If issues
surface outside of domestic abuse concerns, referrals are made to
other community resources. Education,
support, and crisis counseling can lead to a better way of life and
we believe that all people have the right to live in a
safe and healthy environment.

Safe Shelter
The Family Center's primary responsibility is to provide safe
shelter 24-hours, 7 days a week for people who are in crisis as a
result of domestic violence. The shelter is a secured building
in a home-like environment. By providing safe shelter, the Family
Center offers a safe "timeout" for all family members and gives them
an opportunity to regain sense of strength and control in their
lives.

Counseling

walk-ins, and by appointment. Counseling is available to men, women
and children who are dealing with current and/or past abusive
experiences. If issues surface outside domestic abuse concerns,
referrals are made to other community resources.

Self-Help Groups
People who are trapped in a situation
where they feel degraded, pressured, controlled, or isolated, are
victims of emotional abuse. To help build self-esteem, build better
coping skills and to offer an opportunity to speak with others who
are experiencing the same abusive behaviors, the Family Center
offers weekly self-help and support groups for women and children.

Legal Advocacy
Sometimes the task of obtaining legal help becomes frightening and
may be very distressing for a person in crisis. Legal assistance is
frequently the best way that a victim can protect themselves and
their family after they leave the Family Center.
Legal advocacy assistance is available for people in need of
restraining orders, during divorce or custody proceedings, and in
criminal cases related to domestic violence. Judi care certification
is also available.
