A Word From the Director
Domestic violence is a pervasive problem in our society – in our
community. In south Wood County alone, we average 21 arrests a month
for domestic violence…and that number is just the tip of the
iceberg where situations are so serious and out of control that law
enforcement is involved.
So
often we hear the disturbing stories of victims who have suffered or
have lost their lives at the hands of their abuser. These stories
are never easy to hear. Our community has responded with
compassion, providing essential support and funds that ensures safe
shelter and services are available 24 hours at day at the Family
Center… and it has made a difference!
But
there is another important story within the story of what a victim
suffers – it is the anguish and grief experienced by the people who
love them. Chris Hotvedt has lived that story. She lost her
daughter, Jess, September 6, 2002. Trying to make sense of things,
trying to stay connected to her beloved daughter and trying to
survive Chris began to write poetry. Chris has generously shared
her poetry with you which you can read on this website. It is her
hope that it will inspire others to help stop the tide of domestic
violence… so that no other life need be lost.
After reading Chris’ poetry, if you have thoughts or questions you
would like to share – please feel free to contact the Family Center
at 715-421-1511 or email us at
